Juicer info: minerals and where to find them

a bunch of carrots
Hello,
Juicing is a good way to top up your levels of the following nutrients, although they are only needed in small amounts many people fall short of their RDA (recommended daily amount). For an excellent view on the situation learn all you can from Patrick Holford. He's our favourite nutrition guru and cuts through a lot of the nonsense and sensationalism to deliver the facts! Go Patrick!!
Minerals are sucked out of the very soil that the fruit and veggies grow from different plants absorb different minerals. One of the reasons wheatgrass juice is so potent is it's uncanny ability to draw 90 of the known 92 odd minerals out of the soil it grows in. That's a multivitamin and mineral juice that's really hard to beat!

Calcium oh yes, we've all heard of this, it makes for strong bones and flashy white toothy pegs! Alongside that it's essential for the nervous system, muscles and heart! Not to be missed out! Where you find it well milk of course! remember that lesson from school? well milk is white, which makes us think of calcuim and bones BUT the calcium in leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, berries, grapes and kiwi fruit is a whole lot easier to digest. And they are not accompanied by animal fats either. Think about it! |
Chlorine this keeps the your body's fluid levels in balance and regulates liver function. We are mostly water outselves so it makes sense to keep well hydrated and well balanced on the mineral front. Natural sources carrots, celery, leeks, lettuce sea weed. |

Iodine important for normal growth, energy metabolism and the healthy function of the thyroid Where to look for it the mighty seaweed is the best natural source! There is a great deal of nutritional superfoods from the sea, look at seaweed and other vegetables and spirulina and other algea based goodness. |
Iron vital for blood health and your blood's ability to carry oxygen. If you are lacking in iron you may feel rather washed out and lethargic. You can see how juicing is an effective way of topping up natural nutrient levels easily and in harmony with your body! Natural sources its those leafy greens AGAIN!! and berries, snap peas and potatoes. Meat is also a good source however beans and lentils are good alternatives. Vitamin C helps the body utilise iron, so try and orange and green veggie juice. |

Magnesium helps to maintain a healthy skeleton, muscular system and nervous system. You'll notice that most minerals have a maintenance role! Natural Sources include beetroot, broccoli, berries lemon and most of the leafy greens. I'm sure you've spotted the pattern here by now but it is so true to say that the dark green leafy greens and their juices really are the healthiest juices to drink! remember that they are alkalising juices too . |
Manganese is important too again coming from all leafy greens and being important for digestion Phosphorus another important all round mineral, essential for skeletal strength and teeth and a healthy heart and kidneys. Where to find it: celery, broccoli, grapes, kiwi fruit and blackcurrants are all good juicing sources, obviously best if they are organic too. |

Potassium This mineral is essential to for healthy nerves and brain function, it's also an important part of your diet if you have high blood pressure as it will counter balance salt. Where to find it this is the good bit! potassium is really easy to find, most people know that bananas are a good source, but potassium is also found in a broad variety of fruit and veg! All suitable for juice and smoothy making! |
Selenium this is an important anti-oxidant and is good for cardio vascular health. To make a juice rich in it look towards green vegetables, garlic, tomatoes and grind up a few nuts to add to the juice. Sodium we do need some sodium in our diet as it helps nerve function, however it's a little too easy to get too much if you eat salt rich processed food. Sodium is present in pretty much all fruit and veg so deficiencies are very rare. The more obvious excesses can be countered by potassium and drinking plenty of filtered water. |

Sulphur this mineral maintains healthy skin, hair and nails it also helps with brain and liver function. Sulphur can be found in cabbage (be sure to mix cabbage juice with something less....cabbagy) onion, radish, cucumber watercress, grapes and berries. |
Zinc a very important mineral for healthy growth and development. It also plays a part in immunity and digestion as it is involved in assimilation of protein. Zinc availability: you can get your zinc easily from fish, I try myself to eat small oily fish three times a week. For juicing zinc can be found in carrots, broccoli, cucumbers and raspberries. |
